Artist Bio
About the Artist My art philosophy is simple: I paint because I love to. Painting gives me a chance to slow down and look closely. It is a means of translating and expressing the world through the lens of color, pattern, value, shape, and light. Each painting is an opportunity to view the beauty that surrounds me everywhere and every day. Art is a second career for me as I began my working life in the business world. As a child, I pursued interest in the arts in both music and dance, but my practical side led me to a BBA degree at James Madison University. It was while raising two children with my husband in Staunton, Virginia, that I began to pursue my interest in the visual arts. My father gave me the gift of a portrait painting workshop with the renowned artist Daniel Greene, and I was hooked. I began painting in pastels, and was thrilled to watch the human form appear on paper. I often used my own children as models for my paintings, and over time, others asked me to paint portraits of their loved ones.

I have studied my craft under other notable instructors, including James Sulkowski, Gil Dellinger, Gerald Brommer, Judi Betts, Greg Biochini, and Jack Pardue. I find that painting is a never-ending learning experience, as each painting is unique and teaches something new. While pastels were my first medium, I have since added oil as a painting medium, and now find my time split between working in both oil and pastel paint.  Most of my work is done on a commission basis;  I am also represented at Co-Art Gallery in Staunton, Virginia. My paintings may be found in many private and public collections. Kathleen has two grown daughters and continues to live in Virginia with her husband, Eddie. Her many other interests include hiking, kayaking, singing, folk dance, and reading a good book.
